Generative Engine Optimization

GEO does not start with optimising. It starts with measuring.

Generative engine optimisation means appearing in the answers of ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, not just on page one of Google. Working on that without knowing your baseline is guesswork. Alexandrya.AI gives you the baseline, in seven free days.

    Bain & Company, February 2025

  • 5 to 10%

    Client project

If your brand is not named in transactional questions like “Which supplier is best for …?”, it is practically invisible to that lead. In that buying decision it simply does not exist.

Classic SEO tools show rankings and clicks, not what ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude say about you. Alexandrya.AI measures exactly that.

A typical example

The buyer asks the AI. Others get named.

Alexandrya.AI measures exactly these answers every day: which models leave your brand out, who gets recommended instead and which sources sit behind it. The dashboard shows how that changes over time.

In short

SEO, GEO and AEO: what measures what?

Generative engine optimisation covers everything that gets a brand named, and correctly described, in the answers of generative AI systems. The three terms get mixed up constantly. But they answer different questions, and therefore need different metrics.

AEO

GEO and AEO overlap heavily. The decisive difference is not between those two, but between them and classic SEO.

The work behind it

Six levers GEO actually hangs on

Alexandrya.AI measures each of these instead of asserting them, and derives from that which one comes first for you.

Sources, not just your own pages

Over 65% of the content in AI answers comes from third-party sources: reviews, trade articles, forums, directories. GEO is mostly about appearing there, not only on your own website.

Quotable passages

AI systems adopt self-contained, evidenced statements. Text that gets to the point in the third paragraph is cited less often than text that answers straight away.

The competitors named instead of you

Every answer without you has a winner. Who that is and why the AI prefers them is the fastest route to the right action.

Tone and accuracy of the description

Being named is not enough if the description is outdated or simply wrong. That belongs in the result too.

A baseline to measure against

Without measurement, every GEO action is an assumption. The baseline is what proves in three months whether it worked.

Repetition, not a one-off

AI answers change daily. A single check shows coincidence; a time series shows development.

How it works

Three steps from question to action

  1. 01

    Collect the baseline

Enter your brand, competitors and your customers’ questions. The first measurement shows where you stand today.

  2. 02

Read the gaps and the sources

For every answer without you: who is named instead and which source the AI took it from.

  3. 03

    Implement and re-measure

Work through the prioritised list and check daily whether the answers change. That is GEO in ongoing operation.

Who is behind this

Why we built Alexandrya.AI

Since 2015 our agency NX Digital has been making companies visible in Google search, among them ZEISS, Thalia, ThyssenKrupp, BMW and SKY. Since 2020 we have been building our own analysis engine that pulls content and competitive insight out of large data sets.

Then came ChatGPT, Perplexity and the AI Overviews, and with them a question no SEO tool could answer: what is the AI actually saying about our clients, and who is it recommending instead? So we pointed our engine at exactly that. Since 2025 Alexandrya.AI has been a product in its own right.

Every recommendation in the tool comes out of the same consulting practice we have run since 2015. We do not just want to show you that you are invisible. We want to show you what to do about it.

A personal note

A word from the founder

“GEO is turning into a term under which everybody sells something different. My yardstick is simple: if an action works, you have to be able to see it in the answers. That is why measurement comes first with us, not at the end of the presentation.”

Frequently asked questions

Questions about generative engine optimisation

What is generative engine optimisation (GEO)?

Generative engine optimisation covers every measure that gets a brand named, and correctly described, in the answers of generative AI systems such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Perplexity or the Google AI Overviews. Unlike classic search engine optimisation it is not about a position in a list of links, but about whether the AI names the brand in its written answer at all.

What is the difference between GEO, AEO and SEO?

SEO optimises for a position in a results list: rankings, impressions, clicks. GEO optimises for being named in a generated answer: mention rate, share of voice, sentiment, cited sources. AEO (answer engine optimisation) is narrower and targets the direct answer to a specific question, often without a source list. In practice GEO and AEO overlap heavily: both measure whether you are the answer, not whether you have a link.

Does GEO replace classic search engine optimisation?

No. Part of what AI answers draw on is the same index classic search uses. A page that does not appear there has a harder time in AI answers. GEO is added to SEO because it measures a second layer: not the position of the page, but the mention of the brand inside an answer.

How do I measure GEO?

By defining which questions your customers ask and putting those same questions to the AI platforms repeatedly. Each answer is analysed: is the brand named, in what position, in what tone, alongside which competitors and with which sources. That is exactly what Alexandrya.AI automates, daily and across every relevant platform.

Which metrics belong to GEO?

The key ones are mention rate (in how many relevant questions you are named), position within the answer, share of voice against competitors, sentiment (how you are talked about) and link or source visibility (whether your domain is cited as a source).

How long does it take for GEO measures to work?

It depends on the cause. A wrong entry in a heavily cited third-party source can show up in the answers within days to weeks. Building presence in new sources takes longer. The question can only be answered reliably with ongoing measurement, which is why the baseline is the first step.

Which platforms should I measure GEO on?

At minimum the ones your customers actually ask. Alexandrya.AI covers, among others, ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, Claude. Results differ noticeably between platforms, so no single platform is a reliable proxy for the rest.

What does it cost to get started?

The first 7 days are free, with the full feature set and cancellable at any time. After that, plans start at €79 per month, all with unlimited users and daily tracking.
