Answer engine optimisation

AEO means being the answer, not a result.

Answer engine optimisation aligns content so that it is returned as the answer itself: in ChatGPT, in the Google AI Overviews, in Perplexity. The work is measurable, but only if you collect which answer is actually served and which source it cites. That is exactly what Alexandrya.AI does.

If your brand is not named in transactional questions like “Which supplier is best for …?”, it is practically invisible to that lead. In that buying decision it simply does not exist.

Classic SEO tools show rankings and clicks, not what ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude say about you. Alexandrya.AI measures exactly that.

A typical example

The buyer asks the AI. Others get named.

Alexandrya.AI measures exactly these answers every day: which models leave your brand out, who gets recommended instead and which sources sit behind it. The dashboard shows how that changes over time.

Definition

What answer engine optimisation means

Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the practice of aligning content with systems that answer a question directly instead of returning a list of links.

An answer engine takes a question and returns a written answer. That is the Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and voice assistants, and in classic search featured snippets and people-also-ask boxes have done it for years.

The difference to classic search engine optimisation is not the craft, it is the target metric. SEO optimises for a position in a list. AEO optimises for your content to carry the answer: as a quoted passage, as a named source, or as the sentence the system adopts.

In practice that means cleanly bounded passages that stand on their own, clear entities and structured data, plus evidence from third-party sources. And it means the effect cannot be read off a ranking, only off the answers themselves.

Where it sits

SEO, GEO and AEO side by side

The three terms are often used interchangeably. They describe the same shift from three angles, and they measure three different things.

SEO

Search engine optimisation

The question
What position does my page rank in?
The result
A list of ten blue links
What is measured
Rankings, impressions, clicks
GEO

Generative engine optimisation

The question
Does the AI name my brand in its answer?
The result
A written answer naming a handful of options
What is measured
Mention rate, share of voice, sentiment, sources
AEO

Answer engine optimisation

The question
Am I the answer to the specific question?
The result
A single answer, often without a source list
What is measured
Answer share, cited passages
The distinction decides which metric you actually need to collect.

AEO and GEO

Where the two overlap and where they do not

Much of the groundwork is identical. What has to be kept apart is the target: one correct answer is not the same as a recommendation among several vendors.

AEO and GEO · same groundwork, different target metric

AEO

Answer engine optimisation

Goal: be the answer

  • Featured snippets and people-also-ask
  • Voice assistants and short answers
  • One factual question, one correct answer

Shared groundwork

  • Cleanly bounded, quotable passages
  • Structured data and clear entities
  • Evidence from third-party sources
  • Measuring which source actually gets cited
GEO

Generative engine optimisation

Goal: be recommended inside the answer

  • Buying situations with several vendors
  • Share of voice against competitors
  • Sentiment and factual accuracy

The distinction is not hair-splitting. AEO is about one correct answer, GEO is about a selection among several vendors. The groundwork is the same, the target metric is not, and neither is the measurement.

Pursuing both requires a measurement that reports mention and citation separately.

What AEO demands in practice

Four things it actually hangs on

Quotable passages

A paragraph that makes sense without the rest of the page gets picked up. A paragraph that needs three references further up does not.

Clean entities and structured data

The system has to be able to tell what you are talking about and who you are. Without an unambiguous entity the statement ends up attributed to someone else.

Evidence from third-party sources

Over 65% of the content in AI answers does not come from the brand website. What others write about you weighs more than your own self-description.

A measurement that collects answers

Without ongoing querying you never know whether a change worked. Rankings will not show it, because the answer does not appear in Search Console.

How it works

Three steps to measurable AEO work

  1. 01

    Collect the questions

The concrete questions your customers ask, not the keywords a tool suggests.

  2. 02

    Collect the answers

Alexandrya.AI runs the same prompts daily across 7 platforms and logs mention, citation and source.

  3. 03

    Work on the cited source

You see which text carries the answer, and whether it is yours or a trade publication’s.

Who is behind this

Why we built Alexandrya.AI

Since 2015 our agency NX Digital has been making companies visible in Google search, among them ZEISS, Thalia, ThyssenKrupp, BMW and SKY. Since 2020 we have been building our own analysis engine that pulls content and competitive insight out of large data sets.

Then came ChatGPT, Perplexity and the AI Overviews, and with them a question no SEO tool could answer: what is the AI actually saying about our clients, and who is it recommending instead? So we pointed our engine at exactly that. Since 2025 Alexandrya.AI has been a product in its own right.

Every recommendation in the tool comes out of the same consulting practice we have run since 2015. We do not just want to show you that you are invisible. We want to show you what to do about it.

A personal note

A word from the founder

“AEO is being sold as a new discipline, but most of the craft is familiar: readable paragraphs, clean entities, outside evidence. What is new is that you can no longer see the result in a ranking. Anyone serious about AEO needs a measurement of the answers first. Everything else is optimising blind.”

Frequently asked questions

Questions about answer engine optimisation

What is answer engine optimisation?

Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the practice of aligning content with systems that answer a question directly instead of returning a list of links: ChatGPT, the Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, voice assistants and the featured snippets of classic search. The goal is not a position in a list but for your content to carry the answer that is served: as a quoted passage, as a named source, or as an adopted sentence.

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

AEO aims at being the answer to a factual question: usually there is one correct answer. GEO (generative engine optimisation) aims at being recommended inside an answer where several vendors qualify. The groundwork is largely the same: quotable passages, clean entities, third-party evidence. The target metric differs, and so does the measurement: AEO measures answer share, GEO measures mention rate and share of voice against competitors.

What is the difference between AEO and SEO?

SEO optimises for a position in a results list and measures rankings, impressions and clicks. AEO optimises for being used inside a written answer and measures which answer is served and which source it cites. The two share a great deal of craft, but the effect of AEO is invisible in classic SEO metrics.

How do I measure whether AEO is working?

Not through rankings, but through the answers themselves. You need ongoing querying of the same questions across several platforms, logging whether your brand is named, whether your page is cited as a source and which passage was adopted. Alexandrya.AI collects this daily and shows the trend, so an improvement can be told apart from ordinary day-to-day variation.

What kind of content do answer engines favour?

Passages that stand on their own and make sense without the rest of the page. Add an unambiguous entity (the system has to be able to tell who you are), structured data and, above all, evidence from third-party sources: according to McKinsey, over 65% of the content in AI answers comes not from the brand website but from reviews, trade articles and forums.

Which platforms does Alexandrya.AI cover?

Among others ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, Claude. Results are reported per platform, because the same question is answered differently on different platforms.

Is AEO worth it at low search volume?

Often yes, because these questions are asked shortly before a decision. A question with 30 searches a month asked in a buying situation is worth more commercially than a definition question with 3,000. For prioritisation, buying intent counts, not volume.

Is this GDPR-compliant?

Yes. Only publicly accessible AI answers to the prompts you define are collected. No personal data of end users is collected, and all data is processed in line with the GDPR. The provider is NX Digital GmbH, based in Munich, Germany.
